As an article marketer, you need to know, that in order to get your market to notice you, you have to create the most amount of articles the fastest in order to win. If you don't, your just going to be left in the dust! Your article marketing strategy should be to write as many articles you can in the time that you have available. Don't try to write perfect articles, just write good articles! Good enough articles where your reader can get information out of it.

Just make it good, not great. Only when you shoot for trying to create a good article, will you actually create a great article.

Article Marketing - High Quality Lead Generation

Article marketing is my favorite form of lead generation, and I imagine it will stay that way for some time to come. The biggest thing with article marketing, and one of the reasons I think the market is so wide open, is that article marketing doesnt produce massive numbers of leads and thats what so many people are looking for.

We get bombarded with ads for leads for cheap, or leads 1000 at a time but we should all know by now that they are very poor quality leads. But with article marketing, the leads are a much higher quality lead. They are, in my testing, as much as 10 times more responsive than search engine generated leads and that is huge.

People have been trying for years to outsmart the search engines and they really dont need to they just need to write articles.

Anyhow, that is the way I feel about it.

So why are article marketing leads so productive? I think that one of the reasons is that article marketing prescreens the leads before they get to you the person reading the article has the option of just clicking out, you dont get charged for the click, like with ppc.

I think also that there is a psychological impact of reading your article, then reading your squeeze page by the time they get a few emails from you, they have really developed a bond with you and I think that that is real important.

Profitable Article Marketing - Discover 4 Profitable Secrets to Excel with Article Marketing

A lot of people are constantly looking for ways on how they can excel in article marketing so they can set themselves apart from the rest and take the lead. If you are one of them, these 4 profitable secrets can help you realize your goal:

1. Top quality writing. If you would like to increase the chances of your articles being read, picked up, and republished, you need to make sure that you offer nothing but high quality content. This will attract webmasters and other marketers to use your articles as content on their blogs and websites that can boost the number of your inbound links.

2. Maximize your resource box. While most article submission sites would allow you to use up to 3 hyperlinks on your resource box, be sure to check on their guidelines. Some sites would only allow one while others offer unlimited clickable links. If you are allowed to use three, be sure to use anchor texts that will drive your readers to your home page and internal page that is highly relevant to the article you wrote. Then, use one absolute URL. This will increase the chances of your website being visited.

3. Know where to find bright topic ideas. Once you sink your teeth into article marketing, you will need hundreds of great topic ideas. To help you out, you can visit forums and article submission sites that are frequented by your target market. These are gold mines that can offer you unlimited topic ideas that your readers will find interesting and helpful.

4. Do your research. Never write your articles based on your opinions and experiences alone. To make your articles content-rich and reliable, check out reputable resources that can give you details about the topic you will write about.

Do You Believe In Running A Campaign Almost Effortlessly?

Times have changed and with the recent advancement of technology and economic movement of different shoppers online you can definitely find a few gems. Your only way to attain these gems about good value advertising packages can be easily done in 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Create A Plan Centered Around Your End Results

This could sound like a tall order you but its really easy. Just pull out a piece of paper and write down the end results you want to achieve. After that scribble out how much you are willing to spend to achieve that.

Of course, you will need to factor in some work hours involved to carrying out the tasks needed such as the sourcing of the company and others. We will discuss more details later but just do this first step.

Step 2: Fill In The Blanks In Your Plan

If you are still a little stuck on putting out a few details in your plan don't worry. I'll break it down for you:

  • Identify your budget in terms of money on your advertising spots

Article Marketing - Here Is a Look at the Simple Math It Takes to Make a Good Living

Everybody has heard the 80/20 rule. One example of this is 80% of the work is done by 20% of the people. Now these have never been considered hard and fast numbers, I think that whoever originally came up with the rule probably used a little poetic license with their figures. It probably wasn't exactly 80% or 20% that was as important as the illustration that a few have always out preformed the majority.

I was also taught a couple of similar rules in the US Marines. One for example is the 10% rule. What that refers to is the fact that 10% of any group of people is always going to be the dirty birds. They're hard to work with, hard to motivate and can't be counted on.

I also learned in the Marines that the top 20% in any field almost never suffer long term unemployment and always are the top wage earners in their industries. Because of this, I have often thought about whether or not I am striving to be in the top 20% of my field. Sometimes, I have done better at this than other times.

It turns out that to be in business for yourself, requires that you be better than the top 20% just to survive. Actually, you have to be in the top 5% if you want to make it 5 years or more. What does all this have to do with article marketing?

One directory has published its statistics that only 14% of its authors ever write more than 10 articles. It doesn't say, but I'll bet only about half of those make a good living from the results of the articles they write. If you are willing to accept that there is no way to get a more targeted prospect for your website, blog, or ezine, then it is just a matter of simple math for you to be able to make a great living online.

Make your goal to get good at writing articles. Buy books, listen to audios, find people that can help you by offering to edit your work, so you can learn and get better, and then you will start to make money on the Internet, it's that simple.

What if Dan Iverson could show you how to write about any topic on earth and make money? Link Popularity

Wikipedia defines link popularity as a measure of the quantity and quality of other web sites that link to a specific site on the World Wide Web. There are all kinds of website design and search engine optimization terms out there that can be confusing especially when you are just getting started with your small business website.

Lets break down some of the definitions for easier understanding:

    Link Popularity

Link popularity is the measure of the number of hypertext links coming into a website from other websites on the Internet. Although you obviously want to have several links incoming and outgoing, but it's important to pay attention to the quality of your website inbound and outbound links. For instance, if you have several incoming and outgoing links to sites that aren't relevant to your website, your links aren't quality links. When browsing the web and you stumble upon a site with great information and you click on their resources, would you rather be directed to more information about the subject you originally searched for and related items, or links to widgets?

    Anchor Text

The anchor text is the text that you click in a hyperlink. Many times you'll see "click here" to view our pricing. Using click here rather than a keyword such as "widget pricing" takes away from your natural search engine optimization. The search engine algorithms use anchor text and can get you better ranking if you are using it correctly.

    Reciprocal Links

Reciprocal links are two-way links from one website to another. Basically, you place a link on your website to the other company website and they in turn place a link on their website to your website. Often times you are allowed to include your anchor text in the link you are placing on the external site, other times - you can include your company name, website and a brief description. Again this practice is another important part of search engine optimization.

    Non-reciprocal links

Non-reciprocal links are sometimes referred to as one-way links. It is just as it sounds, a link to your site, or a link from your site that isn't returned. Meaning, I often link to Wikipedia for definitions to help explain items in my website articles. Wikipedia doesn't link back to me for my articles.

    Link Exchange

A link exchange involves reciprocal links and usually occurs when you or your Webmaster receive an email from a company that would like to exchange links with you or you can initiate a link exchange with a website that you think has valuable information and would benefit your site users. Always fully check out the sites that are requesting link exchanges with you to make sure that they aren't part of linking farm or using practices that Google and the other search engines frown upon. You don't want to accidentally get your site banned from the search engines!

    Paid Links

Paid linking involves buying and selling links to improve a site's ranking. Google and other search engines use linking in their algorithms to determine a sites "importance" which effects the site ranking. Google frowns upon the process in particular as well as other search engines and there has been quite a bit of controversy over Google suggesting that webmasters report paid links to them. There are instances where it is okay to purchase a link for advertising and you can check out the guidelines in Google's Webmaster Help Center

Now that you're familiar with the terminology, it's time to get out there and start building your link popularity! Remember quality and quantity and watch your website move up in natural search engine results.

    Article Marketing Strategies Revealed

Article Marketing has emerged very fast as one of the best methods to design a successful business online, especially when your resources are limited.

Take care to maintain the quality of your write-ups. If you need to successfully come up with a sound article, you must write only good quality articles that readers will be eager to check out all through.

One of the major features of your article should be the title. Think carefully about a title that will grab the attention of your readers immediately. Your title is the marketing tool for your article. More often than not, your article will be indexed together with a bunch of other articles. Generally people skim through the titles only of the articles and decide by that which one to read up. If your article begins with an interesting title then more and more readers will get hooked to it. If your title is boring and uneventful, few people will stop by read your write-up.

A good introduction to your article shows the quality of the rest of the article. Inform the reader what is in your article for them and how they will benefit from reading it.

When the introduction is over, come to a new paragraph and then start the main body of your article. Divide it into separate paragraphs from every point you want to talk about. Having paragraphed points makes it comfortable to the eyes and mind to grasp the meaning of them and makes for an attractive presentation. The main gist of this paragraph should contain between three and ten points that you wish to cover. It is not necessary to cover all the points that you are aware of on the subject.

End the article with as good a conclusion as the introduction. Review the points you discussed in the foregoing paragraphs and the benefits they will receive if they follow your suggestions.

When the article is all done and ready, scan it through a spelling and grammar checker so that before submitting your article you are sure that your article is perfect which will save you the time to laboriously go through each and every word for manual confirmation.

Not much is needed to get started with article writing and probably by now you already possess the fundamental tools that are needed. This can result in a profitable online business when approached in the correct fashion. Many easy steps are out there to open the avenues for striking business opportunities through excellent articles.

You can begin by offering your articles for sale. Several blogs, websites, and news sites regularly need new articles for content. You can consider writing articles on subjects you are competent in and sell them to blog owners and web masters. However, it is obvious that the articles you write should confirm to certain quality standards if you wish to sell them at the price your article deserves. If you are the owner of your own website or blog you can show your articles there also. There is no alternative to latest and fresh content and hence new material will always keep your website or blog relevant.

If you have some knowledge about Search Engine Optimization or SEO then it will be an added advantage for you because the more traffic your website or blog attracts through your articles the better for you. You should learn the fundamentals of search engine optimization in terms of keywords and keyword density.

Truly speaking, it is very much possible to succeed in online writing and marketing articles. Your effective online business is only a stone's throw away. Start writing quality articles now and you are on your way to a successful internet business.

Link Bait is the New Reciprocal Link

Link bait and reciprocal linking programs have quite a bit in common. Without disparaging anyone who engages in link baiting strategies I do believe that many forms of link baiting are just a dressed up version of reciprocal links without the reciprocation. Note here that I said, many forms. I don't mean all link baiting, but I would guess a bigger slice of the link baiting pie holds no more value than the old fashioned reciprocal link schemes.

A brief history of reciprocal linking

We've all heard it said that reciprocal links are dead. Well, they're not. But some forms of reciprocal linking most certainly are. Remember when Google showed up and started evaluating incoming links as part of the ranking algorithm? This started everybody down the path of seeking to acquire as many links as possible. For awhile, the most efficient way to do this was to simply barter a link exchange. "Hey, if you link to me, I'll link to you!"

This solution started the trend of websites adding dozens of "reciprocal link" pages to their sites linking out to other sites in which they were able to work a link "partnership" with. And for awhile, this type of reciprocation worked. At least until the search engines learned to identify these non-valuable pages. Of course this led to three and four-way reciprocal linking tactics and the creation of link "directories." Again, these worked for a while and perhaps still do to a smidgen of a degree.

The basic problem here was one of motivation. It was all about getting a lot of links, many which were largely irrelevant. It was links based on volume and volume alone. Eventually link reciprocates began to target their links a bit more selectively, to be more within the real of relatedness, but still the concept here was on links, not user value.

    Along comes link baiting

When you hear people talk about link baiting today, it's almost as if we are in the early stages of the reciprocal links schemes all over again. It's all about link volume rather than link relevance. This isn't always the case but for many, if not most, it is.

Rand has a good series of posts all about how to link bait the linkerati. Essentially, Rand explains how to attract links from the masses of people who are most likely to link to you, not necessarily the ones who are most interested in your product or service. I appreciate Rand's posts and I believe he, more than most, tries to get relevant links through his link bait, but getting links from linkers, rather than a targeted audience or related websites, is going right back to seeking out links for quantity rather than quality.

As did reciprocal linking, this will work. At least for a while. But sooner or later the search engines will get even smarter about analyzing links. Just as links from reciprocal pages were deemed irrelevant, I believe that links from the "linkerati" will largely be deemed irrelevant as well. Search engines, in their quest to provide the best search results for each query, understand that popular doesn't necessarily mean relevant. Especially popularity from a group of people who are always interested in what's popular.

The way sites earn quality links today isn't the same as the way links were earned several years ago, so too the link baiting of tomorrow isn't going to be the link baiting of today. True success in link baiting will be from those that learn how to bait their target audience. Some of that will include the linkerati, but most of it won't. The true skill of link baiting won't be getting to the top of digg, but getting to the top of the minds of your target audience so they can't help but want to link to your site.

Where To Get The Best Links To Your Website

The first major role inbound links play in the success of a website is immediate and direct traffic to the website. The second major role for inbound links is to improve the sites ranking in search engines for popular key words. This can mean free traffic to your website for a long time to come.

A close inspection of any high traffic website will reveal that they tend to have a large number of inbound links directed at their website. Getting this information is a fairly simple process from a host of resources. One resource for this information is Yahoo site explorer where you can just enter the url and it will give you the results for internal and external links. There are also others such as Google, Technorati and others.

There are some webmasters that spend a lot of time cultivating exchanges with other websites. This is becoming a more and more ineffective form of link building over time as search engines can detect reciprocal links and discount their value. The value from reciprocal linking comes from the traffic it could bring to your site more so than the link itself.

Webmasters that need to build many inbound links often turn to web directories. Directories are a valuable resource for websites trying to build inbound links. Once the website is submitted to the directory, the directory will review the submission. If the site is a quality resource and fits with the content of the directory, the site will be accepted and a link to it placed within the directory.

Increase your Websites online presence today by getting listed on The Authority Business Directory. Plus, don't forget to submit link for inclusion while you are visiting.

Make it a habit to use targeted keywords on your content and follow the recommended keyword density to make your articles search engine-friendly.

    3. Article submission sites. To increase the chances of your articles being accepted by popular publishing sites, you need to learn and follow their rules by heart. Keep your articles content-rich, informative, keyword-rich, timely, and accurate. Also, eliminate sales pitches or blatant advertisements, inappropriate content, and hyperlinks on your articles. These are the common reasons why articles are rejected online.

    4. Your business. Remember, you are writing your articles to promote your business and your products to ultimately augment your sales potential. As such, you need to be careful in choosing your topics and you must stick with those that are relevant to your target niche and potential clients so you can drive targeted traffic to your website.

    Finding Profitable Keyword Phrases

So you have a site concept developed that you are ready to start writing great content for.

    So what's the next step?

It's time to develop your " master keyword list " which you will use to craft your WebPages. These are the words or phrases you would like to get ranked high in the search engine's for and get the free targeted traffic that this will bring to your website.

It is not enough to simply "pluck" words from the air and start writing your web pages. You need to carefully select which words and phrases to target.

    Food for thought:

    --------------------------------------------------------

What if there are already 10 billion web pages about your chosen keyword(s)?

    --------------------------------------------------------

Do you think a small business owner can compete with large companies who invest millions of dollars into their SEO strategies for highly competitive, high traffic keywords?

Obviously the answer is no but there is a bright side to the equation if you are willing to invest time into researching your keyword phrases carefully. You will want to choose "niche" keywords that offer a combination of high traffic and low competition.

This of course is easier said than done but it can be accomplished as long as you use some of the help that is available on the internet.

Here are a couple of first steps, tips and tools you can use to put together a list of niche keywords for the website topic that you have developed.

    1. Keyword Brainstorming and Research

Think of throwing out a "wide net" here and try to write down as many keywords and phrases (consisting of 2-4 words) that are related to your Website Concept as you can.

Take each one of these words/phrases and visit: http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Type the first keyword phrase into the " Get suggestions for :" box and hit the search button.

This will return you a list of words and phrases that are similiar to your keyword phrase and also provide you with the number of searches for each of these results on the Yahoo-Overture network for the month.

Copy all of the keyword phrases that you think best suit your site concept along with the search data into a text file or spreadsheet. Save this file as your " master keyword list ".

Note: Some of the results will be totally unrelated to your site concept you do not need to copy these into your "master keyword list".

Repeat this process for all of the keyword phrases that you initially brainstormed. By the end of this process you should have a "master keyword list" of several hundred or thousand words and phrases.

Google provides a free keyword research tool as well but does not provide the search statistics that Yahoo-Overture does. Augment your keyword list with any results that you find relevant using this tool. http://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordSandbox

    2. Refine Your Keyword List Part 1

You need to shorten your keyword list to a tightly targeted and highly profitable subset of your master keyword list. These are going to be the words you use when crafting your web pages for the search engines.

Start by performing searches for each keyword phrase in your master keyword list at: http://www.google.com

Google will tell you the total number of sites it has indexed for the keyword phrase that you are searching for. Copy this number into your master keyword list for each keyword phrase.

You will now have the data for the number of searches on the Yahoo-Overture network for the month and the number of competing websites for each keyword phrase in your list.

Think of these numbers as supply(websites) and demand(# of searches) . Finding the supply/demand number for each keyword phrase will help you decide which one's you want to target.

You will have to use your own judgement here depending on your goals and the amount of traffic you would like to generate. Make sure you have a nice mix high traffic and niche keyword phrases in your master keyword list.

It's not that useful to be ranked #1 for a keyword that only gets 5 searches a month. Similiarly, it is very hard to achieve high rankings for high traffic keyphrases because there is going to be a lot of competition.

Trim your keyword phrase list down to 50-100 entries and get ready for step 3.

    3. Analyze the Competitor's Backlinks

There are 3 purposes to this analysis: analyzing whether a chosen keyword space is too competitive, identifying potential link partners (to be used in a later lesson), and to trim your "master keyword list" down to 15-20 keywords that have a reasonable level of competition.

To get started take the first term in your master keyword list and perform a search for it at: http://www.google.com

    --------------------------------------------------------

Note: we are only going to be interested in the "top 10" results for each keyword phrase since our goal is to get listed on the first page of results for our target keywords.

    --------------------------------------------------------

Our goal from this analysis is to find out how "established" your competition is in your chosen keyword marketplace. An analysis of the number of sites that link to your competitor should give you an initial indicator of how important their website is to the world. If a lot of websites are linking to your competitor they must be providing valuable content or a useful tool/service.

To find out who is linking to your competitor visit: http://www.uptimebot.com and enter the first domain from the Google Search results into uptimebot's search bar.

Uptimebot will then query all of the major search engine's and return a report showing the number of links the domain has pointing to it. A site with a lot of backlinks to it must be an information hub and therefore very important.

Perform this uptimebot search for all of the "top 10" competitors from your initial Google search results.

If you are finding that the sites in the search results have several 1000 backlinks to them you will know right away that you are going to have a hard time getting a high ranking for that keyword since a large number of links suggests that the site is already a well established information hub in that keyword marketplace.

Uptimebot also provides you with a link to the search results showing you the actual websites that are linking back to your competitor. Visit as many of these sites as you can and try to identify which ones have complimentary content to your site. You may want to consider contacting the owner's of those domains to request a link to your site.

    4. Refine Your Keyword List Part 2

After performing this analysis for each keyword phrase in your master keyword list eliminate the keywords that you identify as having too much competition (i.e. too many well established "hubs"). We will use this list in the next lesson to start writing your first web page

Using these tips you should now be able to tell which market's you will be able to compete in and which one's already have too many established information hubs to make it worth your while. You will also have a list of "complimentary" websites that you may want to consider requesting links from in the future to help boost your website's "link popularity".

Coreg Leads - 3 Must Know Tips About Coreg Leads

The term coreg leads is an often talked about and criticized topic of conversation. Using coreg leads is not the horrible monster many say it is and here are three tips to use to make your coreg leads a real asset to your business.

Tip #1 - Remember that all coreg leads will never be as responsive as the leads you personally generate from advertising your website, report, or ebook yourself.

Does that make them bad? No not all. It just means you have to take a little extra time to work with them and make them responsive.

You do this by offering them solid, useful content and information. Do not try and send your new coreg leads promotions right out of the gate or you will blow any chances of success.

Tip #2 - Coreg leads are not spam. This is another big misunderstood point. These leads have all had to actually and physically check a box and enter their email address, home address, phone number, first and last name.

Any decent coreg lead will also always come with the i.p. address, time and date stamp of when the person signed up.

If you ever come across a coreg lead vendor that does not offer the above information, simply do not use them.

Tip #3 - You will need a ton of these leads to get good results. If you tink you can simply buy a few thousand coreg leads, upload them into your auto responder, send them a few emails and make a fortune right out of the gate, then you are sadly mistaken.

It literally takes thousands of good coreg leads to get the maximum results. But that is okay because most of these leads are fairly cheap.

You can find companies selling fresh leads for under one penny each. At that price, you can get thousands of them and keep using them to build you a very big and responsive list pretty quickly.

Using coreg leads is a very legitimate and great way to build your list.

Powerful Article Marketing - Revealed - 5 Marvelous Secrets to Excel at Article Marketing

Gone are the days when the only way to generate inbound links for your website is by launching reciprocal linking campaign. Today, you can just write and submit articles to various publishing sites and you can instantly create quality inbound links for your website. These links can greatly help you popularize your website so it will fare well on search engine ranking and get impressive page views.

Here are the 5 marvelous secrets to excel at article marketing:

    1. Multiply the number of your submissions. The quantity of your articles plays crucial role in the success of your article marketing campaign. The more articles you submit, the more inbound links you can get for your website. Multiply your input by either writing additional articles on a daily basis or hiring ghostwriters that can provide you great articles at reasonable prices.

    2. Make use of no-nonsense titles. Capture the interest of online users by using intriguing, attention-grabbing titles.

    3. Optimize your content. Everybody wants to be found on the internet and the best way to do that is to make your articles search engine-friendly. Incorporate keywords on your content that are commonly searched for by your target market.

    4. Proofread your articles. The best person to check and proofread your articles is not you; it can either be a professional editor or an expert article writer. These people can help you identify the weak points of your articles that can potentially hurt your article marketing campaign.

    5. Be consistent. If you want to get huge, steady traffic for your website, you must make your name highly visible online so you can improve your online presence. This can easily be done by regularly writing and submitting your articles not only on publishing sites but also on websites that are frequented by your target market.

Are You Tired Of Playing The Link Exchange Game

One of the tried and tested methods of getting traffic to your web site is exchanging links with other like minded web site owners. But I ask you is link exchanging really worth the effort against other less burdensome web site promotion methodologies you can employ.

Once you have your nice shiny new web site uploaded on to the internet the next step is to get traffic to it. Perhaps the obvious way many new webmasters and even experienced begin to do that is by firing off emails right left and centre to other webmasters seeking a link exchange. But is that the right thing to do I wonder. It is very time consuming to identify potential suitable link partners with the reward often not matching the return in either successful link exchanges or traffic to your web site.

It is a game. Many web site owners will not reply. Or those that do may seek to impose conditions on the link exchange. In my experience, and probably yours too, some of the replies will involve an outright refusal because their site has a higher Google page rank than yours and they absolutely cannot risk linking with you because it will damage their precious page rank. The fact that their site might be hidden away on page 658 of the search results is immaterial to them - but they must protect that page rank at all costs.

Another old chestnut is that the webmaster you are seeking to exchange links with will insist on a front page link on your site nice and prominent but in return they will put your link away hidden on some links page where nobody will ever find it unless by accident.

I have even had some people say they will not link with one of my sites unless I actually change the wording on the front page. I have experienced other similar demands on link exchange requests as I am sure you have too. It is very frustrating do you not agree.

Frankly I have become tired of playing the link exchange game. If I get approached by other web site owners for a link exchange I will always consider that request and see if something can be worked out for mutual benefit though I no longer actively seek to initiate link exchange requests because given what you tend to come across I am of the opinion that it is largely wasted effort.

Of course link popularity is important in attracting traffic to your web site but there are many other methods to achieve that without relying on the old staple of a traditional link exchange. A quick example of one being to participate in forums related to the topic of your web site. Include your web site URL in your signature and join in forum threads. Each reply you post will include your web site address and any other forum member who sees your post may visit your site via your link. The more posts you make, the more links you are gaining which in turn increases the chance of people visiting your web site.

You may take a similar approach by commenting on blogs and including your web site address and also in web site guest books and similar.

Writing articles and submitting them to the major article directories just like this one is another excellent way to promote your web site and gain links at the same time. Your articles may be reproduced by other web site owners, on blogs or used by ezine and newsletter publishers. Using a resource box in each article including your web site address means additional complimentary exposure for your site.

Writing a short article takes very little time. For example writing the article you are reading now took me about half an hour over breakfast and a coffee. Each one you write and submit to article directories means you are automatically gaining backlinks to your web site with the prospect of people visiting your site via your link in the resource box.

Another good way to promote your web site easily and quickly is to use the free press release distribution services which are out there. In a similar way to article submission you gain automatic backlinks and exposure with minimal effort and absolutely no financial outlay.

The half hour I spent on this article will be a much more productive half hour than spending that time emailing web site owners to explore a traditional link exchange. I suggest to you that there is little need play the link exchange game. Try some of the other linking and web site promotional methods outlined in this article to attract traffic to your web sites and you may be pleasantly surprised by the results.

Search Engine Optimisation - Myths, Risks and Pitfalls

From my experience, people who try to increase the flow of organic traffic to their websites domain will at some point attempt a whole bunch of "optimisation techniques" without knowing if any of it really has had, or is having, any effect at all. Some of the SEO techniques I have seen people attempt are, whilst quite useless, based on a good idea. Other methods continually suprise me. Perhaps people that try such things have heard spurious rumours of how to get their site into Google's top ten listings from certain forums. Incidentally they are probably at such a point of desperation that they are willing to try anything to gain just ten more visits.

I am regularly inundated with the same questions such as: Is it worth submitting my site to 300 search engines? Will I get penalised for cross linking my sites? Should I pay to have high ranking sites link to mine? And what exactly does Google page rank do, if anything!?

Questions such as these have driven me into despair and consequently writing this article during which i will attempt to explain definitively the more common SEO myths, risks and pitfalls. In this article we will examine some of the more common beliefs.

Before we get to the list it is worth noting that I have not written it in a particular order and at times I have explained the topic the myth concerns before answering the question.

    Link Building

    Q) Will the more links that point to my website increase my sites placement in search engines?

It will help your website as far as the major search engines are concerned. The most popular search engines use the number of links aimed towards a website as an important factor in determining the sites placement. They look for your link to be coming from sites with; high traffic, quality content and a high page rank, amongst other things. Do no cross link, do not spam your address in forums and on social networks and do not put it on irrelevant sites, or even those that seem slightly dodgy. Take your time, aim for directories that are related to your website, aim for directories with page rank 3+ or aim for blogs or similar sites that are relevant to your content.

    Q) Is it worth me buying a place on a high ranking directory?

So the idea with this is that, say, a directory has a Google page rank of 7 and is very popular. Any site on it will be getting a big rub off via a higher spot on search engine rankings. However the catch is the directory charges 50 a month for your listing. Is it worth it when there are so many free directories out there?

Personally I think it is worth it, as long as the site holds its high rank and doesn't have thousands of listings competing with yours on it. The added bonus with pay for listings is that they usually review and include your site very quickly (24hours), which by itself may be worth paying for. And if you could buy 10 spots on decent directories your site will most likely become highly ranked on search engine results.

There are problems with this though. Firstly, it is said to be against Google's terms of service - paying to get a higher listing on Google's organic results. (Google want their results to show the best and most relevant websites, not those with the most money behind them) They are however, unlikely to be too bothered even if they do find out.

The next problem is the cost. For a small company or personal website it is too expensive to pay monthly for many directories to list them, and possibly not worth it. Lastly, it is not guaranteed to help your website. It should, but does not always. I have paid for listings before and noticed very little difference, whilst other times it has made a huge contribution to my sites ranking. So it may be a risk, but it can pay off extremely well.

    Q) Will submitting a video about my site or product to places such as Youtube be of benefit to me?

A recent link building trend has been to submit a short video describing the webmasters site or the service it provides, to as many video submission sites as possible. The theory behind this being that search engines give more weight in their results to pages with videos. So if your site or product has a video on Youtube, when that product is searched for on the web that video will often come up in the top ten results. If this video has a link to your site in it, under it or as nearby as you can put it, it should be good news for you and your site. People find the video as it is ranked so highly in the results, watch the video, like what they see and then visit your site to perhaps purchase what they saw.

Does it work? At the time of writing, yes it does and it is probably worth doing. Make a video, even if it is just text, sound or a power point presentation, and then submit it to as many video and social networking sites as possible. People will find it and it will hopefully persuade them to visit your site. The only real problem with this being that the search engines will not like all of the "video spam" now being posted on the internet and are likely to change (lower) the priority of videos in their results.

    Google Page Rank

    Q) Will having a higher Google page rank increase the number of visitors to my site?

Before we can answer that we will have to look at what exactly Google page rank is. Google page rank is a spurious form of measurement for site popularity that the company introduced fairly recently. It is unknown to everyone, except possibly Google, how exactly it ranks sites. It is assumed however that its ranks depend upon on a mixture of traffic a site receives, external links pointing towards it and the content it contains. New websites may not have a page rank for many months. It is also possible to have a very successful website with thousands of visitors and sales and still not being ranked highly, if at all. This is because Google only ranks pages once every few months, probably around once every four-five months. So if you start your website and straight off advertise heavily you might recieve a high volume of traffic but it may still take months for Google to look at your site and rank it accordingly. Also, as a sites rank is dependent on more than just traffic levels, in that scenario your site may still be ranked lowly once it is eventually seen.

To see a websites Google page rank you can download the Google toolbar and then once it is installed right click on it and select show page rank.

So back to the myth - Does having a higher Google page rank mean more visits to your site? Well, yes and no. No, because it alone doesn't actually have any effect on search placement, and as such won't increase traffic. Yes, because indirectly it will benefit your site. If you have a high page rank Google will prioritise your site and check back often to see if anything has changed, such as content, giving you a good chance to increase your standing with the search engine. Another benefit is that both people and sites are more willing to trust websites that have a high Google rank. For example, if you are submitting your site to directories you will want to submit it to a high Google rank directory as Google will check them more regularly and take more notice of them and their content (which will be your link). So indirectly, a high Google rank should mean more visits for your site.

    Purchasing Traffic

    Q) Is it worth me buying 10000 hits for /$$$?

OK, we have all seen the adverts in our email promising thousands of targeted visits for an amazingly cheap cost. And at one point or another we have all been depressed enough to be tempted by them. But just say no.

The idea is, for say 100 pounds (or 200 dollars), a traffic company will direct ten thousand or so visitors to your site who are actually interested in your content. It sounds great and some companies will actually provide what they say as far as traffic to your site is concerned. However I have never found one where the traffic is actually targeted and people even bother to look around my sites. Often it turns out to be a robot that is obviously not going to look or buy anything from me. If not it may be that thousands of unfortunate people have had a dozen pop up windows attack them as they bravely try to fight them off. I may be generalising slightly with this, but usually the people that are directed or redirected to your website will want nothing more than to close it down.

It could possibly work for you if your site instantly captures people and most of your money is made off advertising that these people quickly click on before closing you down. However do not attempt to use bought traffic whilst using Google Adsense on your site as it is against their rules and your account might be terminated without warning. Another possible benefit is that some search engines rank sites based on incoming traffic, thus 10000 more hits by anybody may actually boost your rankings. However, this is unlikely to fool search engines such as Google or Yahoo!

    Cross Linking

    Q) What is Cross Linking?

Cross linking is a webmaster practice whereby a person owns many domains, uploads an identical site to each and then heavily links each domain to the others. For example, person A registers lotsofhits, com, but is not getting enough traffic. To fool the search engines into thinking it is a popular website he registers a hundred more domains, so each will have different web addresses but all have the duplicate page content of lotsofhits, com, and all of them link to one another. This in theory should boost the pages rank, as Google, along with other search engines, determine the importance of a site based on links from outside websites pointing to it(along with a few other things). It would also mean that there are a hundred more sites on the web that sell the same product as lotsofhits, com that could all possibly be found.

    Q) Will Cross Linking my site(s) be penalised by search engines?

This is not a myth - search engines often penalise or even temporarily ban sites that Cross Link. If Google detect completely duplicate content on even just two sites that link to each other, then they will at least lower your page and result rankings, if not ban both sites.

    Q) I have heard cross linking is fine as long as the sites do not have completely duplicate content. Is there any truth in this?

If you are determined to Cross Link the safest way would be to own two or three domains that link to each other but each of which have completely unique content and link to other sites as well as one another. It is hardly worth creating two or more unique sites for the sole purpose of cross linking and I would not recommend doing so anyway.

    SEO Software

    Q) Is it true that there is no point in doing any manual search engine optimisation or search/site submissions when you can buy software that will do it all for you?

There is a little truth behind this, but not much. Whilst certain software might make for an excellent tool in assisting your SEO campaign, in the end there you will find there is no substitute for hard work. For example you can download a program that will submit your site automatically to 10000 search engines or put a link to you web page on 50 other sites. The problems there being: only four major search engines exist and between them they take over 80% of all search engine traffic. Those search engines will find your site automatically and rank it according to, amongst other things, relevant and unique content - making the 10000 search engine submission promise redundant (even if it were true).

There are good tools available that will track your visitors (Google analytics), tell you how your site could be made more search engine friendly and software that even tracks how each of your keywords are ranked in major search engines. However, if you are purchasing such software, try to find a trustworthy independent review first so that you are sure you are not getting ripped off. Also try to make sure that any software you use does not go against Google's terms of service.

So, whilst certain software can and will be useful to you, there is no replacement for hard work and unique content and regular updates. The search engine rankings should then take care of themselves.
